Is a Supported Trip Actually More Expensive? | Travengers

It's a fair question, and it comes up a lot. When families or participants first see the total cost of a Travengers trip, the number can look high. Especially when NDIS funding is involved, and people expect it to cover most of the expense.

Here's the thing: NDIS funding does help, but it typically covers the support component of a trip, things like your support guide's time. It doesn't cover the travel components like accommodation, meals, and activities. Those sit in the self-funded portion, just like they would on any trip you'd book yourself.

"When you look at what's actually included, and what you'd need to organise yourself on a standard group tour, the comparison is often much closer than people expect."

We put together a clear, honest breakdown comparing two of our trips to similar offerings from Intrepid Travel, one of Australia's most trusted group tour companies, to show exactly how the costs stack up.

Why supported trips can look more expensive at first

Before we get into the numbers, it helps to understand one key difference: the guide-to-traveller ratio.

1:12 Typical group tour
(e.g. Intrepid)
1:4 Travengers
(supported trips)
A standard group tour might have one guide for every 12 to 30 people. At Travengers, our ratio is 1:3 or 1:4. That level of support takes real, experienced people trained in disability and neurodivergent needs, and that's reflected in the total cost. It's also what makes the experience genuinely safe, inclusive, and tailored.

When you factor in what NDIS funding can contribute toward that support component, the out-of-pocket difference between a Travengers trip and a standard group tour often becomes surprisingly small, and in some cases the self-funded cost is actually lower.

A note on comparisons: Group tour pricing varies widely depending on the operator and style of trip. A Contiki tour, for example, often runs at a ratio of around 1:25 and is priced accordingly. We've used Intrepid Travel as our reference point because they're one of Australia's largest and most established group tour operators, and they run relatively small groups compared to many others, making them a fair and reasonable benchmark.
